I am currently working on the scanner setup, so there may be periodic downtime while changes are being made. Sorry for the interruptions, and thank you for being patient while I work through the upgrades.
What Has Been Fixed So Far
The biggest improvement so far is that the left and right scanner channels are now working correctly in scanner apps again. The feed is no longer being forced into mono.
Current channel layout:
- Left Channel: Enid Police and Enid Fire
- Right Channel: Garfield County Sheriff
If you listen through a scanner app that supports stereo audio or balance control, you should now be able to hear the channel split more correctly.
PC Health Cleanup
I will also be doing a deeper health check on the scanner computer to look for anything using unnecessary CPU or memory.
The current system needs to run as cleanly as possible while the larger upgrade work is being prepared.
More work is planned over the weekend, and some of it may cause periodic downtime. That could include restarting scanner software, testing audio routing, checking left/right channel behavior, adjusting the website player presentation, or cleaning up the scanner computer.
I know downtime is frustrating, but some of these changes have to be tested directly on the system that runs the feed.
If the feed drops out, sounds different, or goes quiet for a while, it may be part of this maintenance work.
Over the next 10 weeks, I will be working toward a completely new backend for Enid Scanner. The goal is to create custom scanner software that can decode and manage the radio audio more independently from the current software being used.
Some of the current scanner software may eventually stop being supported, and I do not want Enid Scanner to be stuck depending on tools I cannot update or change when needed.
Building a custom backend would give me more control over how the scanner system works, how it is monitored, and how future features can be added.
The long-term goals include:
- Custom scanner software built specifically for Enid Scanner
- Better control over the scanner backend
- Better monitoring and troubleshooting tools
- A cleaner foundation for future website integration
- Less dependence on software that may eventually become outdated
A newer computer system is also being set up to go along with this future scanner backend. That upgrade should give the scanner system more room to run cleanly and support future improvements.
In the meantime, I am still working to get the current system running as well as possible. That means cleaning up resources, testing the audio split, and making sure the live feed stays usable while the larger project is being built.
This will be a step-by-step process, not one single overnight change.
If you notice the feed is down for an extended period, only playing one side, sounding distorted, or acting unusual, feel free to report it through the Report / Support page.
Helpful details include the time you noticed it, whether you were listening on the website or in an app, and what sounded wrong.
Those reports help, especially while maintenance and testing are happening.
I know scanner downtime is annoying, especially when people are used to the feed being available. I am working through the maintenance carefully so the current system can stay useful while the larger upgrade is being built.
